Agnes Baltsa is a leading Greek mezzo-soprano.

From playing the piano at age six to later winning a Maria Callas scholarship to study in Munich, she made her debut singing Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro at Frankfurt Opera in 1968.

She then went on to play Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier at the Vienna State Opera in 1970.

Mentored by Herbert von Karajan, Agnes Baltsa soon became a regular at the prestigious Salzburg Festival and appeared regularly at the Vienna State Opera from 1980 on.

Her signature role is Carmen by Georges Bizet and she has sung it many times with José Carreras.

She has also played leading roles in Così Fan Tutte, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola, L'Italiana in Algeri, Cavalleria Rusticana, Aida, La Forza del Destino, Il Trovatore, Don Carlos, I Capuleti e I Montecchi, Il Campanello, Maria Stuarda and Samson & Delilah.

In 1992 she played an opera singer in the German film Duett. 

Agnes Baltsa continues to perform in the major houses today and is still in great in demand.
