Barbara Bonney is an American soprano who studied piano and cello before commencing voice studies.

She made her debut in The Merry Wives of Windsor in 1979 and then made appearances throughout Europe, and notably at the Royal Opera House, La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera.


She made her Vienna State Opera debut in 1987 as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier and since then has gone on to appear in most of the major opera houses of the world and at the Salzburg Festival where she sang Servilla in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito.

Her filmed performance as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier with Kiri Te Kanawa as the Marschallin and conductor George Solti and the Royal Opera, has been a popular version of this opera since its release.

Barbara Bonney continues to take engagements today and as the founder of The Bonney Foundation, whose mission is "to give young singers the needed support for a good career start” keeps her very involved in the opera world.
