Cheryl Barker is an Australian operatic soprano.
She studied with the late great Dame Joan Hammond before making her debut at age 23 singing Blondchen in "The Abduction From the Seraglio" with the Victorian State Opera.
After a move to London with her husband baritone Peter Coleman Wright she joined the Welsh Opera and sang several stand in roles over the next eighteen months.
In 1986 Cheryl received a Fellowship award and in the late 80's she started to perform roles with minor companies.
Her big break came in 1990 when she made her debut at the Sydney Opera House with the Australian Opera playing Mimì in Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème directed by the noted film director Baz Luhrmann.
Since then she has been a regular performer with all of the major opera companies in Australia singing roles like Blondcheen, Mimì, Antonia in The Tales of Hoffmann, the First Lady in The Magic Flute, Tatyana in Eugene Onegin Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly Countess Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro, Desdemona in Otello, Emilia Marty in The Makropulos Affair, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, Marzelline in Fidelio, Nedda in Pagliacci, and the title roles in Arabella, Manon Lescaut, Suor Angelica, Tosca and the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier.
Cheryl Barker's appearances with the English National Opera include Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, the Foreign Princess in Rusalka, The Governess and Miss Jessel in The Turn of the Screw Oksana in Christmas Eve, Musetta, Tosca, and the title role in Richard Strauss's Salome.
She has guested with the Royal Opera, the Scottish Opera, the Vlaamse Opera, the Welsh National Opera and in 2004 she played Sarah Miles in the world premiere of Jake Heggie's The End of the Affair at the Houston Grand Opera.
In 2009 she sang Butterfly at the Paris Opera In 2012 she sang Mariette in "Die Tote Stadt" with Opera Australia and months later the title role in Salome.
Ms Barker has recorded several complete opera recordings including Dvořák's Rusalka, The Makropulos Case, Káťa Kabanová, and Madama Butterfly and two CD's of arias- one with her husband singing duets.
She has ongoing association with the English National Opera and Opera Australia.
