Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, was a German-born Austrian/British opera singer and recitalist.
She was among the most renowned opera singers of the 20th century, much admired for her performances of Mozart, Schubert, Strauss, and Wolf. She triumphed on the opera stage as well as in the concert halls as a recitalist and leading exponnent of lieder.
Elizabeth Schwarzkopf was renowned for her great beauty and her filmed performance as the Marchellin in Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier at Glyndebourne in the fifties is considered by many to be the definitive performance of that role.
She was married to EMI's Walter Legg and in latter years gave many masterclasses until her death in 2006.
