Fedora Barbieri was an Italian mezzo-soprano who enjoyed wide success in a career that mainly centred around La Scala Opera House in Milan.

Considered a formidable actress and singer in her own right, she is now mostly remembered for regularly partnering Maria Callas.

Her most famous roles included Amneris, in "Aïda", Azucena in "Il Trovatore", Mistress Quickly in "Falstaff", Eboli in "Don Carlo" and Ulrica in "Un Ballo In Maschera".

She can be seen as Gilda's nurse in the Pavarotti/Gruberova filmed Rigoletto directed by Jean Pierre Ponelle available on DVD today.

There was a legendary and rather comical feud based on professional jealousy between Fedora Barbieri and Giuletta Simionato throughout most of their careers. Barbieri was tormented by the fact that Simionato marred a recording industry executive and she liked to imply that Simionatto had never shrunk from using the casting couch to advantage.

Fedora Barbieri is one of the featured stars on our "Legends" product range.
