Jessye Norman is an American opera singer and well-known contemporary opera singer and recitalist.

She is one of the highest paid classical performing artists in recent years.

A dramatic soprano, Jessye Norman is associated in particular with the roles of Aïda, Cassandre, Alceste, and Leonore.

Starting in the mid 1990s, Norman began to move away from soprano stage-roles migrating heavily toward mezzo soprano roles.

In January 1997, Norman performed at the second inauguration of U.S. President Bill Clinton.

She is pictured here as Seglinde in a much acclaimed Met production of Die Walkure conducted by James Levine- which is available on DVD.
