Maria Ewing is an American opera singer who has sung both soprano and mezzo soprano roles.
A talented actress, she is noted as much for her acting as her singing.
She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro in 1976.
Her debut at La Scala, Milan followed where she played Mélisande in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande.
Her repertoire includes Carmen, Dorabella in Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte, Salome, Marie in WozzeckLady Macbeth of Mtsensk, the Lady in Poulenc's La Voix Humaine and Dido in Dido and Aneas.
Her discography includes filmed versions of Salome and Carmen and audio versions of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and Pelléas et Mélisande.
She also played Rosina in a Glyndebourne production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia (1982) which is available on DVD.
She also starred in a touring stadium production of Carmen in the 80's and married English Theatre director Sir Peter Hall- they divorced in 1990.
