(Barcelona, Spain, 12 April 1933)
Great Spanish diva, and soprano, Montserrat Caballe famous for her incredible breath control and ability to float notes in pianissimo enjoyed great success in a wide repertoire over a long career.
From Verdi & Puccini to Wagner, Straus and Rossini, Mme Caballe enjoyed a long and successful career despite difficulties with her health that frequently led to cancellations.
One of her colleagues complained once, "You never know when she's going to breathe or stop holding a note…she takes a breathe in the first act and doesn't take another until the second act!"
Despite the cancellations Montserrat has remained one of the most beloved opera stars ever and she has been prolifically recorded – including a famous recording and film of a performance she did with the late, Freddy Mercury (of Rock group, "Queen") celebrating the Olympics at Barcelona.
