George Frederic Handel
Handel's baroque-era opera serias such as Giulio Cesare set the standard in his day and continues to be performed regularly today as does Rinaldo and Alcina.
He composed over 30 operas among a host of other works including oratorios and orchestral music.
In the twelve months between 1724 and 1725, Handel wrote three outstanding and successful operas, Giulio Cesare, Tamerlano and Rodelinda. Semele was completed in 1744.
