Gian Carlo Menotti
Menotti was an Italian-American composer, particularly famous for the children's Christmas piece "Amahl and the Night Visitors" and another opera called "The Telephone".
Amahl and the Night Visitors was the first opera specifically written for television.
Menotti went on to direct some highly successful productions at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. They included Manon Lescaut, Tosca and La Fancuilla Del West
