Jules Massenet

Jules Massenet

(1842–1912)

The most representative French opera composer of his time, Massenet was a prolific and versatile writer.

Despite his popularity plummeting after the First World War, his Werther and Manon still make regular appearances in opera houses today.

Manon with its famous "Gavotte" is overshadowed by the more popular Puccini masterpiece of the same story, Manon Lescaut.
