Richard Strauss

Richard Strauss

(1864–1949)

Strauss was one of very few opera composers in the early years of the 20th century to match the depth and radical scale of Wagner's most innovative works.

He composed several operas including Salome, Elektra, and Der Rosenkavalier, that remain hugely popular today.

While Salome and Elektra are works of great dramatic intensity requiring strong, secure voices, Der Rosenkavalier encompasses more lyrical sweeping phrasing of great intimacy and beauty. The Presentation of the Rose with its meld of soprano and mezzo soprano voices is one of the most beautiful sections in all opera.
