Lorin Maazel

Lorin Varencove Maazel was an American conductor, violinist and composer.

He was a child prodigy who started taking lessons at age 8 and gave his first public performance aged 9.

In 1960 he became the first conductor to conduct at Bayreuth. He was also the conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin from 1965 till 1971. He also led the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1965 to 1975.

In 1972 with the Cleveland Orchestra he recorded the first complete stereo recording of Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess".

In the eighties Lorin Maazel served a term at the Vienna State Opera as General Manager and chief conductor.

He also was the conductor for three opera films - "Don Giovanni" (1979), Carmen (1984), and Otello in (1986
