A Filmed Performance...
When the Metropolitan Opera goes out of its way to excel - it seems there is no stopping it.
In 1978 this magnificent production of Verdi's Otello was filmed as a live performance- and what a performance it was!
With the great Renata Scotto as the deeply betrayed Desdemona and the amazing Jon Vickers as her Otello- with Cornell MacNeil as the treacherous Iago- vocally it is harder to imagine a stronger line up at any time in the last fifty years.
With sets by Zeffirelli, magnificent costumes by Peter J Hall, James Levine in the pit with the incomparable Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and chorus- little wonder this Otello flies to the top of my recommended list.
In short- it is an extraordinary performance of the quality one would be hard pressed to put together today.
This performance is one of Verdi's finest at its very best..
