Top artists - superb production...

Cast: Shirley Verrett, Luciano Pavarotti, Cornell MacNeil Filmed December 1978 – newly released on DVD.

There are several Tosca’s on DVD’s and if you are wondering which one to buy- this may help you. By any measure this one is a superb production well worthy of being in any opera lover’s collection.

The Metropolitan sets and costumes are gloriously traditional and with a dream cast performing at their amazing best under the baton of Maestro, James Conlon, it is hard to fault.

Certainly the picture is slightly grainy due to the era before HD but it is a very minor point.

Given the power of each one of the cast it is hard to say who overshadows who.

They used to call Shirley Verrett “the black Callas” and  here its easy to see why- she is simply mesmerising

Cornell MacNeil is superbly malevolent as Scarpia and turns in a performance  that is a tour de force.

Luciano Pavarotti may be the only one who physically may be outside the ideal, however his voice, at its peak easily makes up for any shortfalls.

It is a thrilling performance – and a wonderful DVD to own.
