Victoria de los Angeles was a Spanish Catalan operatic soprano and recitalist of the highest rank.
Of her it was said, "It is impossible to imagine a more purely beautiful voice- she must be counted among the finest singers of the second half of the 20th Century".
Debuting as Mimi while still an 18 year old student, Victoria De los Ángeles made her professional debut in 1945 as the Countess in "The Marriage of Figaro."
In 1949 she made her Paris Opera debut as Marguerite in Faust and then Mimi at Covent Garden and Salzburg a year later followed by a recital in the USA in Carnegie Hall.
Ten years of performances at the Met followed- with trips to Buenos Aires at the Theatre Colon where she enjoyed stellar status. For six years following, she sang at La Scala and the Vienna State Opera.
She debuted as Elisabeth in Tannhauser in 1961 at Bayreuth in 1961 but after that, returned to the recital platforms and only occasionally appeared in opera.
For years until retirement she toured extensively singing programmes of art songs and particularly Spanish songs.
Her great style on the concert platform - with stylish gowns and always a large stole or wrap were an easily recognisable trademark- but it is for her beautiful voice and roles such as Butterfly and Marguerite that she will be particularly remembered by opera lovers.
Victoria de los Angeles is one of the featured stars on our "Legends" product range.
