Young American tenor Zachary Stains featured as Hercules in the now famous Spoletto Festival production of Ercole S'ul Termodonte by Antonio Vivaldi.
This contemporary production broke new ground in the opera world with Hercules being portrayed as the classic "male nude" often depicted in rennaisance art & sculptures.
This production is available on DVD.
Zachary's other roles to date have included Pollione in Norma, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni and Tamino in Die Zauberflote.
Nudity in opera is not new for women and in recent times productions of the Wagner operas have sometimes featured naked Rhinemaidens.
Modern productions of "Salome" frequently see the diva "sacrificing garb for art" momentarily at the end of the "Dance of the Seven Veils" but Zachary scored a first playing a leading male role on the opera stage, "au naturale" with great style.
